There is no time like the present to focus on nurturing and developing resilience to manage stress, both in ourselves and in our kids. Resilience is one of the 16 Habits of Success that sit at the foundation of being prepared for school and life. Typically these habits relate to success in the classroom, but they can also be developed at home.
Psychologists define resilience as the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources of stress. Fostering resilience results in profound personal growth.
The characteristics of Resilience are:
- Maintaining optimism to ensure that challenges or stresses at home or in my personal life don’t pull me off course.
- Avoiding and overcoming setbacks by drawing from the 16 Habits like stress management, relationships, and growth mindset
- Responding to failure by learning from it and addressing the consequences that result from it
To do that, first we have to name the habit. Then we have to talk about it, and then we practice and model it. This isn’t something we can do overnight, developing new habits takes time. But in the moments over the coming weeks when we are feeling stressed, remembering that resilience is the habit that helps us bounce back and persevere is what’s going to get us all through this tough time.
